“I saw that you were in a TV commercial for the dealership,” Mia said. “Is that how you met Caleb?”
They were seated inside a Starbucks near Lakeline Mall, in far northwest Austin. Mia could see now that Raine was even younger than she’d first suspected—maybe twenty or twenty-one.
“Exactly, yeah,” Raine said. “He saw some of my other spots on the website and asked for me. I think it was the spot for Hot Water, that hot tub place. You rent them by the hour, which seems kind of gross to me, but whatever. I guess they use bleach or something between customers, but who knows? I made sure they filled the tub with fresh water before the shoot, that’s for sure. That spot ran last winter, because that’s when soaking in a hot tub sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? The marketing people aren’t stupid. I haven’t seen the spot yet this year.”
“Which website are you talking about?” Mia asked.
“Pardon?”
“You said Caleb saw some of your other spots on a website.”
“Oh, right. The website for the talent agency. They signed me up about a year and a half ago. They’ve only been around for a few years, but they know what they’re doing. I’ve gotten a bunch of auditions, plus three spots so far. I mean, it’s all local, but that’s a pretty good start. Have you ever done any modeling or acting? You really should. Look at your cheekbones. You are totally killing it.”
“That’s very nice of you to say.”
“Your makeup is totally on point. How tall are you?”
“About five-ten.”
“How much do you weigh?”
“I’m uh...”
“Is that too personal? It’s just that they’ll want to know. You can probably fudge by five pounds, but any more than that and they can tell. Also, I’m not going to ask how old you are, but you don’t want to wait too long, because once you pass thirty, it gets a lot harder to break in. Actually, it’s more like twenty-five, but that’s too depressing to even think about.”
“Tell me about you and Caleb,” Mia said.
The Starbucks was crowded and noisy. There were three young men at a nearby table that kept glancing their way, but Mia ignored them.
“Well, the shoot was at the dealership,” Raine said, “so all of the employees were kind of hanging around, watching. It wasn’t a real tough gig. I mean, I didn’t even have any lines. All I had to do was stand by the motorcycles and ATVs and smile.”
“Kind of like Vanna White,” Mia said.
“Who?”
“She’s on a game show.”
“Oh, cool. Anyway, Caleb started flirting with me afterward and then asked me out. I thought he was kind of cute. That was last winter. They wanted to get the spot on the air in time for spring and summer.”
“So you started dating?”
“I guess so. We’d hang out. He’s like a really good motocross rider, so I’d go to his races sometimes, which is kind of fun, and I was able to do all kinds of networking. I met one woman who runs a clothing company for riders and we talked about doing some online ads.
